About this piece

A bottle is really two throwing problems stacked on top of each other: a full, round belly, then a narrow neck collared in from it without collapsing the shoulder. The neck is thrown almost closed and opened just enough to take a single stem.

Cobalt is the most unforgiving glaze we use — it shows every drip and thumbprint — so the surface has to be clean before it goes on. Where the glaze gathers at the shoulder it fires almost black; up the neck it thins to a bright sky blue.
